A controversial law introducing jail sentences for the crime of offending religious believers was approved by Russia's lower house of parliament on Tuesday.

The legislation was pushed through after the Pussy Riot trial last year, which ended with the conviction of three feminist activists on hooliganism charges for performing a "punk prayer" in Moscow's main cathedral.

Under the new law, "public activities expressing clear disrespect to society and carried out with the aim of insulting the religious feelings of believers" can lead to punishment of up to three years in prison.

A large majority of MPs in the State Duma also endorsed a separate law that brings in heavy fines for the "propaganda of homosexuality among minors".

Under President Vladimir Putin, the Orthodox Church has undergone a revival and the Kremlin is keen to promote what it sees as core traditional values that are supposedly under threat from imported Western culture.

While both laws must still be passed by the upper house of parliament and signed into effect by Mr Putin, that is seen as a formality.

About 20 LGBT activists gathered outside the duma for a "kiss-in" to protest as MPs prepared to approve the "gay propaganda" law. They were pelted with eggs and nettles, and sprayed with urine, by supporters of the law, who numbered around 200.

Maxim, 34, a driver who declined to give his surname, joined in with chants of "Moscow is not Sodom!" and cheered as police loaded the activists into a bus and took them away.

He told The Daily Telegraph that gay rights campaigners "are destroying the Russian family and imposing themselves on our children. If you are ill you go to the doctor, but this lot don't want to be cured. Let them go off to America or Europe where they will be welcome."
